The 100 Round Drum Circle- A Youth Led, Multigenerational Restorative Outreach Program

The main goal of the Restorative Drum Circle Program is to foster multigenerational interaction, provide mentoring for youth aged 12-18, and alleviate social isolation in the community, particularly amongst seniors aged 65 and above. The program aims to empower both youth and seniors, giving them an increased sense of purpose and function within their communities. By creating a safe and supportive environment where participant can freely express themselves through drumming, dance, and expressive writing , the program encourages mutual growth, understanding, and collaboration between youth and seniors, leading to a stronger, more inclusive, and compassionate societal function.
The need for youth-led intergenerational programming in our Communities, specifically metropolitan areas such as the greater D.C. metropolitan area, is imperative in the restoration of the historical strength of the community. This type of programming is crucial and holds immense potential for positive change. Here are some reasons why such programming is essential:
1. Empowering Youth Voices: Youth-led intergenerational programming provides a platform for young individuals within the black community to voice their ideas, concerns, and aspirations. By actively involving young people in decision-making processes and leadership roles, it empowers them to contribute to the restoration and upliftment of their community. This inclusion allows for the cultivation of innovative and fresh perspectives that can drive meaningful change.
2. Building Intergenerational Connections: Intergenerational programming fosters connections and understanding between different age groups within the black community. By bridging the gap between older and younger generations, it creates opportunities for mutual learning, mentorship, and support. This exchange of knowledge, experiences, and wisdom allows for the transmission of valuable cultural heritage and traditions, while also promoting collaboration and unity.
3. Addressing Systemic Issues: Youth-led intergenerational programming offers a platform to address systemic issues that have disproportionately impacted the black community. By engaging young people in critical discussions, education, and activism, it empowers them to challenge and dismantle systemic racism, inequality, and injustice. Their perspectives and insights can help identify and implement solutions that promote social and economic equity within the community.
4. Cultivating Leadership Skills: Involvement in youth-led intergenerational programming provides opportunities for young individuals to develop and enhance their leadership skills. They learn to navigate complex challenges, build resilience, and effectively advocate for their community's needs. By fostering leadership qualities, these programs empower young people to become agents of change, driving sustainable and impactful initiatives for the restoration of the black community.
5. Strengthening Community Bonds: Youth-led intergenerational programming strengthens the bonds within the black community. Through collaborative projects, events, and initiatives, it promotes a sense of belonging, pride, and unity. By working together across generations, community members forge supportive relationships and create a collective vision for positive transformation. This sense of community cohesion is essential for healing, growth, and the restoration of the black community.
6. Inspiring Positive Role Models: Youth-led intergenerational programming highlights the achievements and contributions of young individuals within greater urban communities. By showcasing their talents, skills, and accomplishments, it inspires and motivates other young people to pursue their dreams and aspirations. These positive role models serve as beacons of hope, demonstrating the potential for success and resilience, and inspiring future generations to actively participate in community restoration efforts.
